History

The Oronoque Orchards Story is as American as apple pie. It began in 1949 when Betty Winton, wanting to earn scholarship money for her alma mater, Mount Holyoke College, started selling pies at a small roadside stand in front of her farmhouse each weekend. As time went on and demand increased, the whole family was making pies. The children scrambled up trees to pick the apples, while Betty and her sister-in-law, Jeannette, mixed and rolled out the pies.

As the business grew, the trademark slogan of "Quality is our most precious ingredient" reflected Betty's insistence that the pies retain the pure ingredients and homemade quality.

In 1985, Oronoque Orchards was destroyed by a fire. Although no longer available for sale, the pies were not forgotten by the many customers who had enjoyed them and the many fond childhood memories of visiting the original bakery in Stratford.

In 1993, the Winton's daughter, Susan and her family reopened in the White Hills of Shelton under the name of Oronoque Farms. The fresh baked pies and cookies were made from her mother's recipes.

In 2004, new owners have moved in to carry on the Winton family traditions of their homemade pies and baked goods. Charlene and Jenette plan to continue, along with the help of Ronnie, the baker, and their families to make the same great pies that everyone remembers from their childhood.

Shelton Oronoque Farms is open daily from 10am to 6pm, closed Mondays with extended hours on holidays. We are located on Route 110 in Shelton, approx. 1 mile north of Indian Wells State Park and 10 miles north of Sikorsky Aircraft. The phone number is (203) 925-4237.
